About Paschalis D.
I am a physics graduate with a passion for optics and photonics engineering. During my studies, I completed an internship at the Center of Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation, where I wrote my thesis on the characterization of a plasmo-photonic circuit. I also gained experience as an optical engineer, designing an optical system for a star tracker sensor. Now, as an Optics Application Engineer at SIMTEC SA, I'm responsible for conducting training sessions and offering technical support to customers across the East European region. I work closely with R&D engineers and managers to perform simulation test cases, evaluate software, and streamline workflows. I'm also involved in ANSYS sales activities, presenting the broad portfolio and capabilities of ANSYS software during workshops and conferences.

Packager
While the job of a packager may seem mundane, it provided me with a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the manufacturing industry. As a packager for ImChem, I was responsible for carefully handling and packaging chemicals, ensuring that they were properly labeled and ready for shipment.Although it may seem like a simple job, attention to detail and strict adherence to safety protocols were of the utmost importance. Working in this environment taught me the value of precision and accuracy, as well as the importance of following instructions and procedures to the letter. It also helped me to develop strong time management and organizational skills, as there were often tight deadlines that had to be met.Overall, my experience as a packager has proven to be a valuable learning opportunity, providing me with a solid foundation for my future career endeavors.
Bachelor Student
Photonics Laboratory Intern
In the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research and Innovation, I conducted a thesis on the characterization of a plasmo-photonic interferometric Mach-Zehnder biosensor, featuring a plasmonic Aluminum stripe at its sensing arm. The goal was to design a biosensor capable of inspecting microbiological and chemical contamination in food. The thesis involved extensive research on plasmonics, including a historical retrospection and the applications of plasmonics. I delved into the quality of surface plasmons, plasmonic waveguides, and plasmonic biosensors, with a particular focus on those based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer.Through my research and experiments, I obtained valuable insights into the performance of the biosensor chips. I analyzed the outcomes of the measurements and drew conclusions about the effectiveness of the biosensor in detecting food contamination. This experience allowed me to develop strong research skills, attention to detail, and an understanding of the principles of photonics and plasmonics.
Optical Engineer
As an optical engineer, I had the opportunity to work on a small but challenging project where we designed a star tracker sensor for a satellite. My main responsibility was to design the optical system, which required careful consideration of various factors such as the sensor's field of view, image quality, and sensitivity to different wavelengths of light. To accomplish this task, I utilized my knowledge in optics, as well as my familiarity with OpticStudio, a software widely used in the industry.Throughout the project, I was able to gain hands-on experience in designing and optimizing optical systems, as well as in working collaboratively with a team of engineers and technicians. I also had the chance to apply my problem-solving skills in resolving technical issues that arose during the project, which helped me develop my ability to work under pressure and find creative solutions.Overall, working as an optical engineer in this project was a rewarding experience that allowed me to apply my academic knowledge to a practical problem and learn new skills that are highly valued in the industry.
