In retirement I founded the non-profit, Boyce Research Initiatives and Education Foundation (BRIEF), in 2013 with my son, Grady, to introduce high school and college students to the scientific community through research in astronomy. In our first ten years over 600 students have participated BRIEF programs and have published over 60 scientific papers. BRIEF has two remotely operated observatories (BARO and BARON) and is a Global Sky Partner with the Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO). BRIEF is a sponsor of the AAVSO and the worldwide RTSRE conferences. We train students to participate in research programs such as the NASA/JPL Exoplanet Watch program, many of the programs of the AAVSO, as well as the NASA TESS program. I was an owner and President of a 500+ person high tech contractor. The company was an early developer of PC software and an engineering consulting firm primarily for the military. After the Berlin Wall fell, I moved our software, networking, digital video, and multimedia technologies developed for defense into the private sector. After selling the company in 1998, I consulted with several high-tech firms and participated as an officer and board member of non-profit organizations. With my wife, Debbie Fritsch, I pursued real estate investments and management. Retirement did not suit me well which led to foundation our research and education foundation, BRIEF.In addition to general management, I was also a Corporate Controller, Corporate Secretary, and Chief Financial Officer for two firms during my career. I have participated on a dozen for profit, association, and non-profit Boards of Directors. Currently I am on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO). During my corporate career, I participated in proposing or managing hundreds of government contracts in financial, contract, and project management roles. I graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. in Physics, an MSIA from Purdue University, and most of an M.S. in Systems Engineering from USC. After college, I served as an officer in the US Navy on the USS Canberra in Viet Nam. Raised in Indiana, I have been a San Diego, California resident since 1968.
