About Pat Allen

It’s always been about content for me. I started out as a journalist (newspaper and then magazine writer) and then made the transition to marketing communications and then to marketing strategy. Almost always in financial services, primarily in the investment management business and also covering retail banking and payments. Digital came along just as I was feeling the constraints of communicating in print. Yes, I still “do” print, but digital is what I love—mostly because of what it can do for content. Digital communicating—email, Websites, apps, social—enables us to create more content, distribute it quickly and efficiently enough to be relevant, and measure its impact. My title has been digital marketing strategist, but most of the work that I do feels like the “editor-in-chief” and senior editorial positions I held earlier in my career. There’s no more important part of my job, I believe, than to continuously survey what’s working, what’s tired, what’s emerging—you get the idea. Fresh is what succeeds in digital.Financial services is an area where there’s much more to come from. Twitter is one source I use to keep current and, in turn, I love to share financial services-related content that represents new, if incremental insights. Follow @RockTheBoatMKTG to see whether our interests align.Historical note: In the third quarter of 2009 I founded AdvisorTweets.com, a Website that aggregated the Twitter updates of U.S.-based financial advisors. It was envisioned as a real-time window to what advisors around the country were thinking about. I maintained the site and its accompanying blog and Twitter account to help my clients listen to their clients. By July 2011, @AdvisorTweets ranked #7 on Sulia's list of personal finance Twitter accounts. I sold the site in July 2011 to Smarsh.I continue to explore ideas that help introduce transparency and lower the barriers to accessing what financial services providers have to share (and learn from).
