I was fortunate to have practiced small animal veterinary medicine for many years. That was a lifelong dream starting at age 12. Then there came a time in my career where I wondered if there was something else I could do yet still be involved in veterinary medicine. There was no better next step than to work for the organization that supports the entire veterinary profession, the American Veterinary Medical Association. Associations are an American phenomenon vital to advocating for groups of people with the same interest. I was once again fortunate enough to find a place in the AVMA where I am able to use my experience where I can help people with their careers. I help people make the most of their career by providing resources to set up goals for the next steps in their journey. I speak at meetings and develop resources on career management and career transition. By always learning and paying attention to opportunities, working can be a satisfying part of life. That is a much better option than merely hoping the best things will happen without effort.
