At the moment I am a Ph.D student at Nuno Santos’ Lab at the Biomembranes Unit of the Instituto de Medicina Molecular (iMM), Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (FMUL). The Ph.D. thesis, entitled “Design of a liposome approach for the delivery of fibrinolity agents” aims to develop an encapsulated fibrinolytic therapeutic strategy and understand its impact on blood clot formation and lysis.

This project aimed to design and use bioinspired nanomaterials for applications in the detection and amplification of antibody interactions with relevant biological ligands. The iMM team is skilled in peptide design and their functionalization with relevant biomolecules… Show more I was a research fellow at the Biomembranes Unit of the Instituto de Medicina Molecular (iMM), Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa (FMUL) in the context of the project “AMYLOIDETECTORS” (PTDC/SAU-ENB/117013/2010). This project aimed to design and use bioinspired nanomaterials for applications in the detection and amplification of antibody interactions with relevant biological ligands. The iMM team is skilled in peptide design and their functionalization with relevant biomolecules, and dengue virus capsid proteins were also preferencial ligands given the synergies with current ongoing research. During the time of this fellowship I had the opportunity to further develop my skills in biophysical analysis techniques as Fourier transformed infra-red (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and circular dichroism (CD), among others available at iMM. This period also allowed me to investigate amyloidogenic phenomena and gain more expertise in the area. Show less

Thesis work, entitled “Bioproduction of cationic cysteine derived gemini surfactants towards novel gene and drug delivery complex”, has been conducted under the joint supervision of Prof. Maria Henriques Ribeiro and Célia Faustino at the iMed.ULisboa (Research Institute for Medicines), Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa (FFUL), Lisboa, Portugal. Thesis work, entitled “Bioproduction of cationic cysteine derived gemini surfactants towards novel gene and drug delivery complex”, has been conducted under the joint supervision of Prof. Maria Henriques Ribeiro and Célia Faustino at the iMed.ULisboa (Research Institute for Medicines), Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa (FFUL), Lisboa, Portugal. The general theme of the research dealt with the functionalization of biomecules (enzymes) and their immobilization on surfaces. The increase in lipophilicity of treatments by encapsulation could offer a solution for some therapies in which an optimal delivery system is still to be found. This project aimed to contribute for a sound approach to the design and development of novel gemini biosurfactants (amino acid surfactants - AAS) with a new-generation of AAS to meet the increasing demand from pharmaceutical and food industries, by adopting a biocatalysis as a condensating methodology for preparation of more efficient and safer surfactants. In the development of this project I worked in lipase biocatalysis optimization with non-specific substrates, including enzyme immobilization methods in sol-gel lenses, development of colorimetric methods for product detection, and media design assays around biphasic, co-solvency, and solvent-free systems. I successfully conducted My studies (graded 19 out of 20 maximum score) and participated with poster and oral communications in national and international conferences in the project’s framework.
