Having grown up in a rural area, opportunities are often limited. I worked my way through college selling skis, kayaks and bikes for an outdoor retailer. On a daily basis I worked with individuals to identify their needs so that I could recommend the right products. Upon graduating college I worked as a private teacher. During that I doubled as a ski coach at a local mountain resort. After that I began my career in technical sales, where I found a path that allowed me to combine my passion for sales and customer service.

We trained weekly in difficult terrain. I was also responsible for teaching the athletes not only new skills, but how to securely evaluate and navigate dangerous terrain. It was important to act as a positive role model for the athletes by demonstrating the proper ways to behave on the mountain. As time progressed, myself and another coach took on the task of redesigning the program to better suit the needs of the athletes.The program provided athletes with opportunities for personal growth within a team environment. Coaches sought to develop their athletes into well-rounded individuals, helping them to develop skills that would assist them well into the future. Athletes and parents were asked to define season goals in a number of areas, and then work with coaches to develop a pathway to realize them.

My favorite part about working there was seeing the smile on a person’s face when they purchased something they liked. I truly did enjoying selling kayaks, bikes, skis, outerwear, etc. I was responsible for training and managing staff, which I found to be very rewarding. During the summer seasons I was responsible for managing a fleet of 50 rental bikes and kayaks during the summer. In addition, I had management duties like closing the store, restocking inventory, as well counting the drawers at end of business. My favorite task while working at High Mountain Sports was running kayak and pontoon tours. This involved taking customers to scenic places in Garrett County via pontoon or kayak and giving them background and history of the area.
