INTRODUCTION: Joseph Yang is a partner at PatentEsque Law Group, LLP, and a Lecturer in Law at Stanford Law School. Previously, he was VP & General Counsel of Cryptography Research, Inc. Earlier, Joe co-founded & later led the IP Strategy & Transactions practice of Skadden, Arps (Palo Alto), the world’s then-largest law firm. PRACTICE: Joe specializes in IP-centric deals (patent/tech transactions, JVs, IoT, manufacturing & standards bodies). He is also an expert witness for high stakes IP/licensing disputes. He has led hundreds of deals worth billions of dollars for automotive, computer, electronics, consumer, entertainment, energy & healthcare clients. Because of this breadth, Joe is often hired for “convergence" deals between disparate industries. He has also been an arbitrator, overseen complex patent litigation & developed corporate IP portfolios. Originally, Joe was an aerospace & energy engineer. Joe has a J.D. from Stanford and a Ph.D. (engineering) from the California Institute of Technology, where he has served on the boards of the Caltech Alumni Association, and the Caltech Associates.
