I've been working as a Sr. Elixir Developer with Loblaw Digital (LD) organization for about 5 years and humbled for having the opportunity to introduce Elixir to the tech lead team and developer community in LD. In my unofficial role as an Elixir Ambassador I contributed to building, and for the last few years leading the first LD Elixir team: Product Catalog Services (PCS), with the mission of designing and implementing highly efficient data transformation pipelines needed for assisting and handling very large amount of enterprise business signals such as continuing product metadata curation and price updates.The role of the PCS team is to:- Process the product and pricing feeds that power all our e-commerce sites and the complex fulfillment workflow- Aggregate data from different sources such as Joe Fresh and third-party sellers- Allow our internal teams to interactively edit/enrich that data so that it is e-commerce ready in near real time- Send live updates to our downstream clients (such as search and data science)- Provide data feeds out to external clients (such as Instacart)- Provide a complete monitoring system offering an unparalleled level of control over every critical business component and related infrastructure resource used by our systemsIn order to perform all these tasks effectively, the PCS team rely on the quality of the tools in our arsenal, the biggest ones being the combo we use – Elixir and Phoenix. This stack provides us with a very scalable, highly concurrent and very fault-tolerant ecosystem, ensuring extremely high uptime and low latency for our clients and the site.Currently my team is working with the merchandising team to improve the browsing experience online by revamping the product categories that customers see. This is made possible with the infrastructure in place that we are constantly improving, including a portal where a complex taxonomy graph can be created, modified and linked to certain products along with live pub/sub notifications being generated and sent downstream for each product that is affected in the graph. That means any improvements will surface onsite within minutes of them being made.We continue to iterate constantly and improving our services and designs, and in my role as a Staff Developer for 2 years now and hands-on Sr. Elixir Developer, I help the team with contributing to promoting engineering excellence and strengthening the presence of functional programming in our organization.
