Dr. Patriann Smith is a Saint Lucian American Professor & Author of the books, "Black Immigrant Literacies: Intersections of Race, Language, and Culture in the Classroom" (2023) published by Teachers College Press & "Literacies of Migration: Translanguaging Imaginaries of Innocence" (2024) published by Cambridge University Press. https://patriannsmith.comAs a multilingual transnational scholar-mother and a former K-12 teacher, Dr. Smith's scholarship lies at the intersection of race, language and immigration and is geared towards enhancing cross-linguistic, cross-cultural and cross-racial understanding in literacy research and instruction. As Professor at USF, Dr. Smith uses a transdisciplinary approach to examine factors that impact Black immigrant literacy teaching/learning. She has proposed ‘a transraciolinguistic approach’ and the ‘Black immigrant literacies’ framework for clarifying Black Caribbean immigrant Englishes and literacies by highlighting ideologies that influence transcultural literacy teacher education and international literacy assessment. Based on "Black Immigrant Literacies," Dr. Smith has also proposed 'transraciolinguistic justice' for transcending current limitations of transracialized language via the impending global metaverse & 'raciosemiotic architecture' for addressing how students' semiotizing is racialized. Dr. Smith’s extensive body of research is published broadly in journals such as the American Educational Research Journal, Reading Research Quarterly, International Multilingual Research Journal, and The Reading Teacher. She is co-author/co-editor of the books, “Affirming Black Students’ Lives and Literacies: Bearing Witness” (2022) & "Educating African Immigrant Youth: Schooling and Civic Engagement in K–12 Schools" (2024).Dr. Smith is a nationally and internationally recognized keynote speaker (e.g., White House, United Nations, OECS) and has served in numerous capacities across universities and organizations including her recent role as a co-leader and co-founder of the $3.6 million USAID funded initiative, RISE Caribbean, designed to launch the Caribbean Educational Research Center (CERC) at The UWI Cave Hill in Barbados.Dr. Smith has also served in numerous editorial and professional roles (ILA, NCTE, TESOL, AERA) across multiple fields including Executive Committee/Board of Directors of the Literacy Research Association (LRA). Dr. Smith was recently elected as Vice President of LRA and will go on to function as President-Elect, President, and Past-President as part of her four-year term (2024-2028).
