General Manager Nalco Water Africa And Mining Mea
Situation and approach:• The Nalco Water unit serves industrial water processes across heavy industries (e.g. steel, chemicals), light industries (e.g. automotive, food & beverage), pulp & paper as well as mining. The Mining business in MEA should expand its offering by adding more process chemicals capabilities while the other segments should be enriched by developing additional business opportunities through equipment and services.• After analyzing our best opportunities and matched those with our strength we focused on those key accounts leading innovation and sustainability within their respective industry. We trained our technical and commercial team as well as distributors on value-based selling with a focus on our non-chemicals offering. This allowed us not only to accelerate our sales growth but also to improve our margin. We strengthened the Mining business with flotation additives for phosphate and copper and recruited process specialists to shorten the business development time in this area. Responsibility and achievements:• Regional P&L management with revenues of USD 200M• Leading 300 associates across sales, business development, key account management, application engineering and equipment engineering functions• Outgrowing the market by 2.5x• Improved EBITDA margin by 13pp within 24 months• Increasing average sales per customer by 30%• Expanded share of non-chemicals sales (equipment, service) from 3% to 21%
Vp Emea And India, Clariant Mining Solutions
Situation and approach:• The Mining business in EIMEA was a loss-making unit that lost more than a third of its topline in the three years prior, with a strongly underutilized manufacturing asset in Morocco and a lack of focus while serving three distinct segments (explosive emulsifiers, fertilizer additives, flotation additives). The key opportunity was to define a strategy for sustainable growth and turning this business around.• Our analysis showed the flotation segment to be the most rewarding opportunity, and we defined our priorities and re-allocated resources accordingly. Within the flotation market we focused on the highest ability-to-win categories copper and phosphate and set up our team structure accordingly. Increased focus helped us to accelerate our innovation projects and subsequently to win new projects at more interesting margin levels. In order to fill the capacity of our production unit in Morocco we marketed emulsions locally to generate gross margin until we could replace this opportunistic business by our core business.Responsibility and achievements:• Regional P&L management with revenues of CHF 100M• Leading 100 associates across marketing & sales, business development, application development and innovation• Outgrowing the market by 1.7x• Improved EBITDA margin by 17pp within 24 months• Won projects representing sales of CHF 130M• Decreased the innovation project duration by 20% on average
