I love my work with the First Freedom Foundation, helping (mostly) young people to become more effective advocates for freedom of religion or belief. It is very heavy work because of the extreme religious persecution these amazing human rights advocates often face. But recognizing the dignity of all, (including our oppressors,) is a source of hope, power, and peace--both personal and political. A little about my background:At age 15 I got my first job working for a congressional campaign. I’m not going to say that we caused the Republican Revolution of 1994, but Newt Gingrich did say that it would not have happened without our race. ;) I dropped out of college at age 19 to lobby the UN full-time. My proudest accomplishment was starting the “UN Coalition for Women, Children, and the Family,” a multi-faith network which has worked and prayed together for nearly 25 years. While continuing to lobby the UN, I did eventually finish my undergrad at BYU, and went on to Pepperdine’s #1 Organization Development program where I specialized in trans-organization collaboration. I love coalition work because most of the challenges I care about are too big for any one organization to solve. I’ve worked on over 20 political campaigns across North and South America, Europe, and Africa, including four presidential campaigns in the US, Haiti, and Mali. Looking back I am grateful for what I learned about strategy by working in a field with such a clear measure of success or failure, but one of my biggest regrets is a race that we won. Moving forward I have chosen to focus on promoting principles rather than people. I’ve also consulted for more than three dozen political or humanitarian organizations across five continents. I really enjoy consulting, because with relatively little time I can use my experience to help organizations to increase their impact. I’d enjoy getting my number to all seven continents though, so if you know of an organization doing good in Australia or Antarctica I’d love to help them to do better. ;)
