What happens when you connect your neighbors, families, and youth to the awesome experience of growing their own food?Here at the Urban Farming Institute (UFI) we don’t just grow food we grow people!I’m currently Executive Director at the Urban Farming Institute, which provides training in commercial urban farming to improve community health and economic outcomes, particularly in lower-income neighborhoods. Our whole goal is to empower people in the community and promote production of local healthy food with sustainable methods.In June Historic Boston Inc., and partners recently dedicated our $3.7 million historic renovation of the 18th century Fowler Clark Epstein Farm. The redevelopment includes transforming the space into a working urban farm, including a new state-of-the-art farmer training center and teaching kitchen.Prior to joining the Urban Farming Institute, I served as Literacy Coordinator for Boston Public Schools. Over the years, I have worked with numerous non-profits specializing in the areas of the arts, employment and education. My journey started in sales and marketing for Xerox and Digital Equipment Corporation. Later continuing sales, in the community, working for WILD 1090/ HOT 97.9 radio and WGBH. I am the Founder Board member of “They Made It So Can I”, the 5th grade speakers series, and serve on the Boston Nature Center Sanctuary Committee.Our motto is, ‘We don’t just grow food, we grow people”. That’s the most important thing to me: helping people grow in health and well-being.
