Managed the Editorial Department (news/sports/photography), including budget, staffing and daily operational decisions; assigned stories to reporters; interacted with photo/newswire/syndicate services; coordinated with other departments and other editors in the Journal Register chain; led department through software database/pagination systems transition; performed frequent technical troubleshooting; substituted for managing and sports editors, when needed; edited stories and laid out pages, and edited photos, on nightly deadline; uploaded pages to printing plant; posted stories and photos to newspaper's website; wrote editorial columns and occasional stories and blogs; performed community outreach. In addition to proofreading and page design duties of a copy/layout editor at this West Chester, PA, newspaper, I also assigned and checked others' nightly work, scheduled departmental shifts, assisted in departmental job interviews and performance evaluations, and substituted for City Desk editors (checking reporters' story drafts, occasionally checking sources) as needed.
