We are developing a suite of technologies that support hydrogen liquefaction, storage, and dispensing for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) and fuel cell powered unmanned systems.

Research thesis: characterization of woodpecker habitat with airborne and spaceborne lidar for occupancy modeling.Woodpeckers are considered to be a keystone species. That means their presence is indicative of other wildlife because they 'engineer' habitat by creating cavities in trees that can be used as nest sites, or by creating sap flows that trap insects thus providing easy food for other species. Thus, if we know the kind of habitat structure woodpeckers prefer and we can quantify that structure from remote sensing data, we can assess large tracts of land for habitat quality and species diversity. That information is used by natural resource professionals who can make more informed land management decisions.

Research thesis: Quantifying spatial and temporal variability of distribution patterns in acoustic backscatter density (from ship-based surveys) with synoptic airborne lidarFish populations are typically assessed using sonar aboard research vessels. Of course fish schools move one way and the ship another so after having performed a grid shaped transect you have to determine if you're double counting fish schools. James Churnside, a physicist at NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder Colorado, surmised that you might be able to minimize the double counting by surveying fish from an airplane using lidar. Because a plane is faster than a ship, time between transects is minimized and the 'picture' that unfolds is closer to an instantaneous snap-shot of the survey area resulting in more accurate biomass surveys for fisheries managers.
