Patrick Baud Email and Phone Number

Patrick F. Baud is counsel in the Department of Justice's Constitutional, Administrative and International Law Section. His practice and research focuses on the Crown's powers and immunities; parliamentary privilege; the jurisdiction of superior and federal courts; constitutional amendment and interpretation, constitutional application and remedies; the rights of the Indigenous peoples, especially the right of self-government; and federal-territorial relations. Patrick previously served as counsel in the Aboriginal Law Centre and the Crown-Indigenous Relations, Northern Affairs and Indigenous Services Legal Services Unit. Before joining Justice, he served as a law clerk to the Honourable Justice Andromache Karakatsanis at the Supreme Court of Canada and to the Honourable Justice Mary J.L. Gleason at Federal Court of Appeal. Patrick received his law degrees with honours from McGill University, where he was on the Dean's Honour List and won awards in constitutional law, public international law and trusts. He wrote his honours thesis about the Crown's authorities in Canadian public law, part of which was published in as "The Crown’s Prerogatives and the Constitution of Canada" (2021) 3(1) Journal of Commonwealth Law 219. As part of his studies at McGill, Patrick served as a part-time law clerk to the Honourable Justice Daniel W. Payette at the Superior Court of Quebec.
