I am just completing a successful four-year term as head of the recently merged Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion at Lancaster University. The department was ranked first in its unit of assessment in REF2014 for Impact, second for Research Environment and third overall. The department is a multi and interdisciplinary department with some fifty academic colleagues. My time in the role has seen a year on year increase in student numbers and an almost tenfold increase in research funding. Prior to taking up my post, I was on the management committee as deputy head of department and director of postgraduate studies. In the previous department of Politics, I was Director of Research. Prior to coming to Lancaster, I was the head of the School of Politics and Public Policy at Griffith University in Australia. That department is currently one of the few Politics departments to be rated five star in the Australian ERA exercise.As well as working in the United Kingdom and Australia in HE leadership roles I have also been a Visiting Fellow in universities in the United States and am also a regular participant in international conferences. My research and consultancy funding has always been collaborative and I have managed and worked on several interdisciplinary projects. In the course of my research I have also worked with numerous State and Federal government departments and local governments in Australia; for the United Nations preparing their World Public Sector Report ; and for professional bodies and private sector companies in Australia and in the United Kingdom.
