A career in tech was probably inevitable for me, growing up with personal computers in our house as far back as I can remember. What really set off my curiosity was when we first got high speed internet access. Soon I was learning small bits of code, HTML tags to use in message board posts or basic CSS to style a Myspace page. When deciding on a career change, I drew upon this past experience to begin exploring the world of software engineering. I joined into an immersive full-stack web development bootcamp in late 2019, and am now pursuing my first position as a developer.Joining an immersive bootcamp gave me first hand experience working in an agile and fast-paced environment where I learned multiple object oriented languages, with both frontend and backend frameworks. I was successful in building projects both solo and pair/group settings in which I stayed open to new ideas from others and was willing to do whatever was needed for our success. I was jokingly referred to as the “manager” of our cohort by my classmates, as I was often leading group review discussions and making sure we were on time for lectures. My capstone project for the bootcamp, Backline, was developed to help me in my side business renting out my sound/DJ equipment for events. I created the backend used to store these rentals using Ruby on Rails as a framework and PostgreSQL to build the relational database. The frontend was built using React to create lightweight, reusable components and Redux to simplify, store and manage state for the entire application. JSON Web Tokens were used to provide secure login and store encrypted user information client-side and styling was achieved with React Bootstrap.Prior to pursuing my career change, I spent 10+ years in retail leadership. My management experience has equipped me with strong communication skills, and I enjoy using them to foster collaboration between diverse groups of peers. Attention to detail was critical in my communication with corporate teams, and my problem solving skills were honed as I often had to pivot quickly to tackle new issues.A music lover and performer since an early age, I began with school band classes. It wasn't long before I was playing in my first middle school punk band, continuing to write and perform live music through my college years.
