• Developed a Paying for College comparison tool that allows students to make informed choices about college financing. Washington Post called it “one of the best college-cost tools [they]’ve seen”.• Lead a campaign to strengthen protections for “campus cards”. Drafted a consumer advisory, issued a “Request For Information”, hosted a campus banking forum, presented at a Department of Education negotiated rulemaking session, published several consumer facing blogs, conducted market surveys and provided technical advice to congressional offices. • Assist with CFPB’s enforcement actions against schools engaged in unfair, deceptive and abusive practices. Work closely with State Attorneys General, FTC and the Department of Education and drafted sections of a model consent decree and researched key data points. • Aid student loan borrowers by drafting several guides and “AskCFPB” questions outlining how to choose the best student loans and managing their college money. Participated in a number of webinars and consumer education events to educate borrowers on their repayment options. • Draft congressional testimony, provide technical expertise on draft legislation and participated in several congressional briefings.• Participate in the White House “Open-Data” initiative. Employ Google’s web analytics to develop user friendly web tools. Serve as the unofficial “data guru” for the Students team. • Facilitated several strategic planning sessions for the Office of Financial Empowerment, including vision setting, problem identification and goal setting.• Serve as a Contracting Officer Representative (COR) for several contracts.• Sit on the Employee Orientation, Retreat Planning, Social, Research and Emergency committees.• Selected as CFPB’s first detail to another federal agency, the Department of Veterans Affairs.

• Managed the development and launch of the GI Bill® Comparison Tool that has helped over half a million users make informed decisions with their hard earned education benefits. The open source tool consolidates information from 17-25 different websites, into a single click tool. Working with VA CTO’s team was able to configure the tool to increase performance and save VA over $400,000/year. Briefed Dr. Biden about the tool for her interview on Good Morning America.• Drafted a report to Congress discussing the implementation plan for the Improving Transparency of Education Opportunities for Veterans Act of 2012 (PL 112-249).• Chair and serve on several interagency working groups (WH, VA, DOD, ED, DOJ and the FTC).• Facilitated the creation of a centralized complaint system for student veterans to file grievances against colleges. VA / DOD / ED have already received over 2,500 complaints. Complaints are forwarded to schools for response and shared with over 650 different law enforcement agencies. • Assisted in the development of postsecondary education outcome measures that will help student veterans make informed choices about schools and help key stakeholders learn about the effectiveness of the GI Bill benefits program (e.g., veteran graduation rates).• Led efforts to approve an interagency MOU between VA / DOD / ED / CFPB to facilitate information sharing and help prevent abusive and deceptive practices by schools.

• Championed the passage of the historic Post-9/11 GI Bill, providing $72 billion in new education benefits to over 2.1 million combat veterans by fostering consensus among key stake holders, drafting legislative language, conducting original research and elevating public awareness. Negotiated with the Congressional Budget Office to reduce their cost projections by $7 billion.• Submitted comments on proposed VA administrative regulations, worked closely with GAO and was appointed to the VA Secretary’s Veterans Advisory Committee on Education.• Created and maintained NewGIBill.org and twitter account, answering more than 10,000 benefit questions with an average response time of 16 hours. Invited to speak at numerous conferences and selected as a technical peer reviewer for RAND’s “Service Members In School” report.• Served as a regular spokesperson in the media (CNN, FOX, CBS, ABC, NBC, Washington Post and NPR). • Drafted over thirty Congressional testimonies and IAVA’s Congressional communications, including the annual, priority setting legislative agenda and the bi-annual Congressional accountability report card. • Trained, managed and mentored three legislative staff members.• Secured mandatory mental health screenings for returning servicemembers, two-year advance funding for the VA and the creation of a tax credit for companies that hire unemployed veterans.

• Testified before Congress and advised executive offices nine times on appropriations, mental health/TBI issues, deployment rights and education benefits. • Drafted legislation to strengthen protection for deploying student veterans that became law and wrote a guide for deploying students. • Published two letters to editors in The San Francisco Chronicle. • Secured the creation of the National Guard Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program, halted the abuse of stop-loss orders and expanded eligibility for VA health care for combat veterans.

• Founded IAVA’s DC office which the Washington Post described as having a “powerful voice” and as a “key player on veterans issues on the Hill.” • Secured a Senate amendment to increase funding for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center by 50%and blocked attempts to cut their funding levels.

• Deployed to Iraq and provided emergency medical support for an infantry unit that patrolled Baghdad. Treated both soldiers and Iraqis for medical and trauma emergencies. Earned the Combat Medical Badge (CMB) for providing medical care while under enemy fire. • Awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for my “superb” service as medic and for being a “true ambassador” to the local Iraqis. Taught myself basic Arabic, organized the delivery of medications, toys and shoes from U.S. based groups and provided medical assistance in our area of operations.• Labeled as a “prominent military blogger” by MSNBC for my writing about our unit’s experience overseas. Directed/edited an hour long documentary about our tour.• Assisted in providing two weeks of free medical care to the indigent in Belize. Cross trained as an optometrist and fit over 500 Belizeans for glasses.• Served as a clinic section leader , supervising 3 soldiers. Ensured clinic was always adequately supplied and conducted training classes for the medical command including a mass casualty exercise in 2008.• Volunteered for several disaster duty assignments (including Hurricane Katrina/Rita).• Graduated with honors from Combat Medical Training and the Warrior Leadership Course.
