The Next Generation Vehicles (NGV) lab at the University of Michigan is performing research in autonomous robotics to develop a system for autonomous control of full-sized passenger vehicles. I support this effort by writing and testing software in C, C++, and Java to facilitate the development of sensing and control systems for the vehicle and to ensure that the developed systems perform as expected. This effort includes the development of stand-alone utilities for evaluating systems off-line, and providing performance feedback and tuning control for various algorithms, as well as a full validation and verification test and regression suite.

The Mobile Robotics Lab performed research in state estimation of mobile robots, specializing in dead-reckoning based techniques. We developed embedded, self-contained devices which could track the movements of wheeled robots (tele-operated or autonomous) with very high accuracy. We also developed a system which could track the movements of pedestrian walkers based on a sensor embedded in or strapped to one of their shoes. The lab was also responsible for maintaining a suite of wheeled and tracked robots for use by faculty and students.My work at the MRL involved all aspects of software design, development, maintenance, and testing for all software associated with the lab, which included embedded Linux suites with custom kernels, custom communications APIs, desktop visualization applications, web-based database interfaces, and even Android-based programs for interacting with our embedded devices. This wide range of applications required an equally wide range of languages and techniques, including Linux C/C++, MSVC++, Java, PHP, Matlab, Python and shell scripting, and Android libraries.
