Two design lectures (GRA 225 and GRA 294) offer a solid foundation to the study of theory and best industry practice in visual communication design through seven modules including “tension and form,” “anatomy of type,” “structure and grid,” “color harmony,” “story and manga,” “interaction design with icon, index and symbol,” and “portfolio design and communication models.” These modules will equip both design and non-design degree students with knowledge and hands-on skills in applying visual elements and typography for design projects in print, digital and web. As an extension, GRA294 lecture is based on Patrick’s PhD research in fusing sound and vision in design education. It explores the expressive possibilities of type and image in both static and dynamic representations (from literal to abstract) for storytelling in different platforms.
