First Otter hired in 2011 to stabilize and create IT. Walked into a shop with the proverbial burning platform: mission critical system crashing under load of explosive growth. Dove in, hands on and came up with a number of innovative solutions to stabilize the platform. At the same time, built the development organization up from nothing and collaborated on the construction of other parts of the IT organization. I am a hands-on manager and motivator of engineers. I strive to be a technical visionary and stay abreast of new engineering techniques to make our development factory faster, leaner and more productive every day. I work hard to be inspirational, motivational and mentor. Perhaps out of vogue, but I am inherently a servant leader. That’s the way I act and how I treat others.I’m most proud of having recruited a terrific team, locally, and am thrilled to work alongside them. I currently manage a team of fifteen of the best developers and architects in Northern Colorado.I achieved the company’s highest Great Places to Work scores in the company one year and was in the top the other years. I believe my team would call me a good manager.I am an Agent of Change, always driving to improve. I’m championing/driving our current move to DevOps. And I'm creating a Data Science practice without our company.I’m a firm believer in the Power of Transparency. Our productivity, quality and efficacy metrics are displayed, real time, in public places. I run by facts and data, not conjecture. I am dashboard-data driven. My continuous build data is charted, trended, peer reviewed and published for all to see.For fun, I spend evenings and weekends learning more about the Internet of Things (IoT). I’ve deployed a myriad of sensors around my home and use it as an IoT test bed. I share my finding on my personal blog: http://donotfreezesoftware.blogspot.com/.
Principal Architect
Responsible for definition and stewardship of Enterprise IT Strategic Architecture. As one of the first hired IT employees, my job has always been to foster Enterprise Architecture in a dynamic and extremely challenging environment. As part of the small Enterprise Architecture group my goals are to reduce corporate capital and operating expense, streamline the IT infrastructure, reduce complexity, standardize the development lifecycle, and enable outsourcing initiatives. I accomplished this by defining a three year strategic plan and selling the business value of Enterprise Architecture to the entire companyPast positions include: Director of Software Development
Director
Led team of 8 direct reports in an organization of 100 people and managed a budget of approximately $18M. I was responsible for timely and on-budget delivery of critical applications. Applications ranged from customer-facing portals, business to business gateways to mission critical network-facing applications. I managed the design, development and deployment of a large $7M program to bring our Voice over IP product to market with a key customer on an aggressive timeline. Recognized for my ability to quickly triage and correct problematic applications, I took four large, customer facing essential applications with stability problems and restored their service levels to expected standards in very short order. In 2005, I led the evaluation and selection of a tool that enabled corporate change from workflow based systems to Business Process Management. I was often the lone proponent behind this effort until it was recognized by the CEO made a corporate wide initiative for 2008.I was part of a small team of ‘First Responders’ to our corporate mergers. My job was to evaluate acquired companies’ systems and plan for their integration. Over the eighteen month period of seven acquisitions, I resolved over 100 acquired applications and developed the plans for their adoption into the strategic systems. As a “technical leader” I designed, developed and deployed a Java application that resulted in several millions of dollars of avoided network expense. I enjoy learning and strive to keep abreast of new technologies. I still enjoy designing and coding applications when the opportunity is appropriate.
