In this role my responsibilities are to assist the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority under the supervision of the Ministry of Youth and Skills Development establish Industry Sector Skills Councils in four priority industry sectors to further support successful implementation of the Sri Lankan Government's Skills Sector Development Program. The identified sectors are, Tourism, Construction, ICT and Manufacturing and Engineering Services.

In this role I am responsible for the day-to-day engagement and liaison with Manufacturing and related services industry sectors on a national basis with the aim of promoting and brokering the development of the workforce/s and implementation and take-up of nationally endorsed qualifications. This role also includes the provision of strategic advice on industry skill and training needs to the Australian governments through existing channels of communication and processes. Other responsibilities includes managing and coordinating projects on a local and national basis with a particular interest in that of the disadvantaged. I have recently initiated and taken carriage of a project to get Indigenous Australians into the metals and engineering industry sector as well as a few years ago in the Marine Industry sectors, all of which was/is in line with the National Skills Shortage Strategy;Another area in which I have been actively involved is Liaising with State based government departments to assist with workforce development-related issues and initiating related projects in the various regions as well as assisting with the concept of educating employers to become informed users of the VET system.

My responsibilities as an Industry Advisor on this project was multi faceted. The main aim was to assist in the Facilitation of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) of the Philippines’, Industry Bodies and government departments and agencies to establish and strengthen the operations of a National Industry Working Group (IWG) for the Tourism Sectors in particular. I was also responsible for the co-ordination and facilitation of IWGs to develop Industry Competency Standards, new Training Programs, Assessment Guides and Procedures, understanding of Recognition of Prior Learning, the creation of Local Industry Bodies (LIBs, in the regions and provinces) to represent industry and provide advocacy to government, and the introduction of revised Sectoral Skills Planning. I also assisted TESDA, IWGs and LIBs to develop assessment and certification policies and procedures. I was responsible for establishing and running a zonal office to manage the implementation and monitoring of the project in regions six, seven and eight of the Philippines.

My responsibilities as the Standards Generating Coordinator at the MERSTEA we to identify the need for relevant national unit standards and qualifications so the MERSETA could make decisions regarding standards generating activities. I also facilitated and managed standards generating activities to ensure MERSETAs skills development priorities were met through accredited training. I was involved drafting activities of competency standards for consideration by Industry and Government Agencies. On numerous occasion I facilitated and ensured the international benchmarking of the developed standards to ensure recognition and portability as well as ensuring that the standards met the requirements set by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) This role also require me to managed the consultation process across industries and between social partners and stakeholders to ensure the adoption and implementation of the industry developed and endorsed standards and qualifications. I also managed the application of National Qualifications Framework requirements within industry and provided professional development activities of workplace- based assessors and trainers to support shift to Competency Based Training and to ensure quality.

Before the establishment of SETAs my responsibility with the MEIETB was to advice and assist employers and labour unions to ensure the successful implementation of the NQF, Skills Development Act, SAQA Act and Skills Levies Act. It also comprised liaising and facilitating the piloting of standards at company level, managed standard setting projects in which industries participated, involved in the actual training of Assessors and Assessment Moderators across industries. I also got involved in the Implementation of revised QMS systems geared to monitor the accreditation processes and the viability of companies and providers in so doing managed and monitored the accreditation of companies to train apprentices and learners. Moderation and QA of the Trade Testing at Trade Test Centers across the country;

My responsibilities as a welding instructor at the college included the setting up and the management of an accredited welding workshop for the delivery of industry-related training. I was also responsible for developing course material to deliver the training relevant to the need of industry in terms of the four-year apprenticeship system. I also provided learner support systems to assist learners in the apprenticeship and related programs. Training and upskilling of existing workers through an outcomes-based approach to teaching and learning. Apart from the practical component of welding training I also delivered theory-based and on job training to learners, and I prepared apprentices for their final trade tests

I was indentured as an apprentice welder in 1980 and qualified as an artisan in 1983. As a qualified welder my responsibilities were mainly welding of high-pressure vessels and pipe-work for the heavy engineering industry in all welding applications and related codes. In 1998 I was promoted to the Planning department where I was responsible for the Interpretation of customer specifications, liaised with production engineers and customers on specific contracts, the procurement of certified materials and the time-factor involved in contracts, and the continuous monitoring and reporting on progress of contracts.
