Mr. Burns is an active member of the Law Society of Alberta with over 19 years of experience as a solicitor, primarily practicing securities and corporate law over that time. Mr. Burns is a Vice President and is General Counsel to Boardwalk REIT, Canada’s largest owner and operator of multi-family rental communities, where he has been employed since Boardwalk Equities Inc.’s conversion to a REIT in May 2004. During his time at Boardwalk, the REIT has made over $600 million in new acquisitions, over $2.5 billion of debt financing, as well as underwritten public offerings of $120 million worth of 5.31% unsecured debentures and $66 million in equity at $22.80 per trust unit. Prior to joining Boardwalk, Mr. Burns was with the law firm of Stikeman Elliott LLP, from 1999 until 2004. During his five (5) years in private practice, Mr. Burns worked on the conversion of Wellco Energy Services Inc. (2002), AltaGas Ltd. (2004) and Boardwalk (2004) into income trusts; the Nabors Industries’ takeovers of Enserco Energy Services Company Inc. (2002) and Command Drilling Corporation (2001), as well as the Northrock Resources Ltd. takeover of Tethys Energy Inc. in 2001;. While employed by Pembina Pipeline Corporation in 1997, Mr. Burns also participated in the conversion of that company to an income trust. Mr. Burns is a graduate of the Law School at the University of Alberta and graduated from Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario in 1991.Mr. Burns is also a director of P. Burns Resources Limited and P. Burns Coal Mines Limited, owners of freehold surface and mineral interests in Southern Alberta and Northeast British Columbia.Mr. Burns recently completed his term as Chair of the Mount Royal University Foundation, volunteers with the Salvation Army and is a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Mr. Burns is a member of the Calgary Golf & Country Club, Glencoe Sports & Fitness Club and Ranchmen’s Club.
