Profile bio

About Patrick Demus

As a 3-year old, I would not sit still when the dentist wanted to check my teeth. The only place where I would stay still was in front of the aquarium in the waiting room. As a consequence, that is where the dentist started checking my teeth. My parents supported my fascination and soon after the Demus family had their first aquarium at home. The foundation of a lifelong passion had been laid, and I grew into a fish nerd keeping and breeding tropical fresh water fish. In 1996, 15 years old, I learned to dive in the Cayman Islands on a family vacation. Ever since, I have been addicted to observing fish in their natural habitat. In 2001, I started a career as a Diving Instructor and Dive Guide in the Red Sea. I can spend endless time hovering in front of a coral pinnacle observing the interactions between its inhabitants. The next logical step was to understand this complex ecosystem in depth. I graduated in 2010 with a Master’s degree in Animal Behaviour at the University of Vienna, with an emphasis on fish. The fascination grew fuelled through curiosity. I conducted behavioural research with several fish species in labs, as well as in the field in the iconic Lake Tanganyika and the Red Sea. Until today I have logged over 2000 dives around the world and spent more than 80 days of my life in my favourite ecosystems underwater. Branching out, I conducted behavioural research in Java with a fascinating nocturnal venomous primate – the Slow Loris. I have shared my passion for the animal kingdom for nine years in the education department of the Zoo Vienna.Being in the wilderness is the best. May it be researching, hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, snorkelling or diving (or all of it combined) - anything to simply connect with nature. This passion for the natural environment under and above the waterline has taken me to over 80 countries on all 7 continents of our planet. In 2015 I started a career in the Expedition industry and filled the roles of Lecturer, Zodiac Driver, Dive master, Snorkel master, Assistant Expedition Leader and Expedition Leader. I am pleased to see the sparkle in our baby boy's eyes when we are observing the fish in our aquarium in our home in Helsinki. Are you are looking for an Expedition Leader with excellent knowledge and ample experience in the (sub) tropical regions around Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, Japan and the whole South Pacific on board Luxury Expedition vessels (100pax max) and exploring independently driven by curiosity? We should definitely have a chat.
