I worked as part of a small management team charged with running one of the most consistently successful spa's in Hyatt Hotels and Resorts' Americas division, Stillwater at the Park Hyatt Toronto. Working directly under the spa's director I helped ensure that Hyatt directives and protocols were consistently adhered to, operational efficiency was maintained, and that the spa ultimately either met or exceeded corporate revenue projections. I oversaw a staff of 60+ persons ensuring they were delivering the highest levels of customer service and teamwork. Establishing an environment where staff were supported and felt comfortable airing concerns or bringing forth suggestions and questions was crucial to this. Collegiality amongst staff was high and turn-over rates remained low throughout my tenure. Despite being situated in a hotel at the heart of a large city, the spa's clientele was overwhelmingly local and repeat. Not surprisingly, one of my primary responsibilities (and one of the core tenants of our business model) was cultivating client relationships which consisted primarily of friendly and respectful engagement; anticipating needs and wants; and resolving any issues that came up, performing service recovery if necessary. My time at Stillwater and the Park Hyatt Toronto has afforded me a great deal of perspective and experience, allowing me to understand intensely this sort of service sector business from multiple fronts ranging from front line service provision to revenue stream management to inventory maintenance to protocol and brand consistency. Stillwater has been able to maintain its own unique character negotiating the sometimes divergent forces acting on what is at once an intensely local enterprise, defined by the Toronto-based community it serves, while at the same time being part of a luxury international brand, operating under the auspices of a larger corporation located in another country.
