About Patrick Dunn

I am currently working as a Software Engineering Manager at Capital One and have extensive experience at companies such as at Hired.com / Vettery where I was a Director of Engineering for over four years managing across full stack, backend, and machine learning teams, at Recruitics where I was Lead Software Engineer on the Platform team, managing and leading development on big data analytics processing systems, and at Wayfair where I was a Software Engineer II who was team lead on a number of different projects.I studied Information Systems while at Carnegie Mellon University as well as Policy and Management. I take advantage of this diverse background in my work, and I always keep in mind what one of my early mentors said, that the real leaders, especially in the tech world, are player-coaches, people who can guide and teach as well as be there "in the trenches" participating in the development process.

I guided the members of the special projects team successfully back into our software teams to share their knowledge and experiences with our engineers. I helped the new CTO develop and realize a new set of areas of responsibility for our features teams. In late 2020 Vettery acquired Hired and in April 2021 after a transition period we rebranded as Hired.Post-acquisition, we rebranded as Hired and I transitioned to managing our Data organization as well as our Assessments platform. New York, Us
At this point of my career at Vettery I not only continued to manage the Matching team and the Data Engineering team, I also took on management of two more teams. First, I helped to create a special projects team that worked on creating fast prototypes of green-field development for search and match functionality in an environment with diversified candidate data sources and challenging profit-sharing scenarios, as well as enriching this diversified set of data sources with further 3rd party services. This exploratory project was highly successful at rapidly developing new features while still maintaining tight software security controls. Second, I managed the Data Science team, guiding how the fairly self-sufficient team in integrating with Product and Engineering roadmaps and understanding how they developed new features in their machine learnign models.

    Technical Lead Manager
Hired (Formerly Vettery) Nov 2018 - Aug 2019
    New York, Us
I directly managed two teams at this stage of my career at Vettery. I took on the Matching team, a group of full-stack developers who created website functionality for our hiring manager clients to search through candidates, the main engagement loop of Vettery's platform. This team were heavily involved with creating Elasticsearch queries and front-end interfaces for viewing candidate data. I also took on management of the Infrastructure team, which evolved into multiple teams around DevOps, Data Engineering, and Front-End utilities. With the hiring of a DevOps Manager and the reabsorption of Front-End utilities into our features teams, I was able to focus on Data Engineering and helped shepherd in a more robust and stable data processing environment.
  • Recruitics
    Lead Software Engineer
    Recruitics May 2015 - Nov 2018
    Norwalk, Ct, Us
I was the Lead Software Engineer for the Platform Team. I managed three direct reports and worked closely with Product Managers and other internal clients to create new data processes that powered Recruitics' analytics platform. All of the data that powered our offerings flowed through the systems that my team built and maintained.I built the systems that ingested and analyzed large amounts of data, and I helped to found an exciting Engineering culture that made folks engaged and eager to work. My team utilized Java, Kotlin, and Apache Spark to build our modules, running on Amazon Web Services and Databricks, writing to endpoints such as Elasticsearch, Postgresql, and Redshift. We had an eye for process performance and data accuracy while also striving to maintain low costs for the company. We attributed and aggregated job search traffic, creating raw analytics that can be further digested and distributed to customers to optimize their recruitment strategies.
  • Wayfair
    Software Engineer
    Wayfair 2012 - 2015
    Boston, Ma, Us
Since I joined Wayfair in 2012 I have worked on a couple different teams in the Engineering department, enjoying the various challenges the teams have provided. On the Product Availability team, I inherited a legacy system in ASP that handled shipping notifications from carriers and suppliers. I was the sole engineer responsible for the upkeep of the system and I introduced major changes to improve processing for efficiency and performance purposes. I also rewrote the system in PHP for even more gains in efficiency and performance, scaling out the system and future-proofing it to survive the increasing workload from our growing customer base.On the Partners team I worked on a multi-threaded order processing platform in VB.NET to receive orders from retail partners such as Walmart and Amazon. I additionally created a series of merchandising categorization tools for our business teams to use to manage our retail partner catalogs. When Wayfair acquired DwellStudio in 2013, I was tapped to work on the integration with DwellStudio's wholesale system, adapting our existing order processing platform to take these new orders while also creating a REST interface in C# to handle wholesale orders from our customer service representatives.I then joined the newly formed Testing Development team to help provide tools to make the lives of our engineers better. I created automated tests to crawl our website to ensure stability and functionality using Selenium WebDriver. I maintained our PHPUnit codebase and educated engineers in best practices and promoted the creation of unit tests. I additionally managed a team of manual testers and volunteered time to help them learn to program so they could potentially join the automated side of the team in the future.
