I am a Senior Mediator at the Consensus Building Institute. For more than 25 years, I've worked to build consensus on complex public and organizational issues in the U.S. and Canada. My experience encompasses local site disputes to national policy debates, helping negotiators meld science, policy, the law, and politics. I believe that conflict can be harnessed to ignite new thinking, forge new relationships, and craft new solutions to difficult and complex problems. I bring an open mind, listening ear, tolerance for anger and frustration, and a practical, problem-solving mindset cultivated as a child of a rancher and honed as a graduate of MIT, that seeks to help people together “get down to work.” My focus is building agreements on and finding solutions for the built and natural environment across sectors, interests, disciplines, and organizations. Core practice areas include natural resources, land use, transportation, energy, agriculture, and water.I am co-author of the books Resolving Land and Energy Conflicts (2018), Land in Conflict: Preventing and Resolving Land Use Conflict (2013), Managing Climate Risks in Coastal Communities: Strategies for Engagement, Readiness and Adaptation (2015), and Dealing with an Angry Public: A Mutual Gains Approach to Rebuilding Trust and Improving Long Term Relationships (1996)I'm also listed on the roster of conflict resolution professionals of the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Interior. I hold an M.C.P. in Urban Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.A. summa cum laude from Carleton College.
