ECoS SURE allows me to gain research and professional experience by providing a platform to perform research on my project while also taking part in professional development seminars. My project involves the characterization of rice cultivars with the goal being to understand the effect of nucleotide changes on rice phenotypes. The application of this would be to potentially create rice resistant to drought while still being high yield, which would have major implications on food availability and security. This project in involves using various techniques to analyze the DNA such as PCR, transformation, colony PCR, and more.

At the Country Club of York, I assisted in the setup and running of golf operations. This included organizing tee times, and managing the spacing of golfers. I also assisted in the setup of golf outings with up to 120 players. I would also handle cleaning, charging, and cycling of all golf carts on course in addition to interacting with members on a daily basis. Communication between departments (Golf, Kitchen, Grounds Crew, etc) was another valuable skill used to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience for members and guests.

At Tennis for Kids, I lead groups of up to 25 children that ranged from 5th to 8th grade in a variety of drills and games to teach proper tennis form. The job required being able to manage and supervise large groups of children in addition to keeping them engaged with tennis. The goal was to teach them tennis without taking away from the fun of the sport.
