I'm a control systems engineer specializing in modeling and model-based control of energy systems. My most advanced area of training is control systems design, though I also have an extensive background in thermal/fluid sciences to support my work in the energy systems field. My doctoral research focused on combustion mode transitions between traditional spark-ignition (SI) mode and the much more intricate homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) mode in automotive gasoline engines. This broad topic encompassing 5 inputs and 3 outputs exposed me to a multitude of control problems, including air path control, combustion timing control, torque control, and thermodynamic state estimation. Since my graduation, I've worked on stationary HCCI generators, where I apply the concepts from my graduate work, but have also taken up electromagnetics and motor control to develop control algorithms for the motor component of the generator.My proficiencies are as follows:-Model-based control design (classical control, state feedback/MIMO control, nonlinear control, optimal control, adaptive control)-State estimation-Control-oriented modeling and parameterization (I tend towards grey-box modeling, using simple physical models as a baseline approximation and introducing empirical parameters to fit data from complex systems).-Numerical methods and optimization-Thermodynamics, combustion, heat transfer, electromagnetics (electromagnetics learned mostly on-job)-Experimentation, data collection, and data processing; operating engines/generators-Physics-based data analysis-Controls integration, bring-up, calibration, and debugging - working simultaneously with software and instrumentation to get new systems functioning properly-Diagnostics and safety code for control systems - basic knowledge, learned mostly on-job-Software engineering - version control, unit tests, on-system validation - basic knowledge, learned on-job-Electronics - basic knowledge, learned on-job
