My career has focused on drug discovery for critical diseases. I have a passion for translating great science into products that save lives. My significant accomplishments include the first cloning and characterization of the Hepatitis B viral surface antigen. This work led to the development of the HBV vaccine that saves two million lives a year. Other major accomplishments are the cloning and characterization of numerous cytokines and immune genes, including multiple Interferon-alpha genes, Interferon-gamma, Lymphotoxin (TNF-beta), Bactericidal Permeability Increasing Protein, LPS Binding Protein, Platelet Activating Factor Acetylhydrolase, and Macrophage Derived Chemokine. This work advanced the understanding of immunology and led to clinical trials (BPI and PAF Acetylhydrolase) and approved therapeutics (Interferon-alpha and Interferon-gamma). In addition, my lab was the first to characterize several targets that led to approved small molecule therapeutics, including CCR5 (subsequently shown by other labs to be the HIV co-receptor) and PI3 Kinase p110delta (Idelalisib).
