Tasked with advancing the mission of the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia and advocating for the equitable and responsible stewardship of the Philadelphia region's historic buildings and cultural spaces.

Greater Philadelphia Area

Invited to teach “Side by Side” courses on the history of Philadelphia at Drexel University’s newly opened Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships. “Side by Side” courses utilize the Community Based Learning (CBL) module designed by Cyndi Rickards, offering free open enrollment to residents of Mantua, Belmont, and Powelton Village alongside approximately fifteen Drexel undergraduates. Over the Winter and Spring terms my course will be conducting oral histories with longtime residents, and assist in the creation of an online database catered to the needs of the Mantua Civic Association and affiliated partners.

Tasked with overseeing a yearlong public history/public art community outreach initiative which reflected on the steady decline and gradual rebirth of Philadelphia’s historic housing stock. Tasks included archival research; oral histories; public program administration; development and management of online content; collaboration with residents, neighborhood associations, artists, and scholars; managing a public community-designed “funeral” for a soon-to-be-demolished West Philadelphia rowhome. This project was made possible by a grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage’s Heritage Philadelphia Program.

In collaboration with Gray Area, an ongoing preservation initiative housed at the University of the Arts, duties include archival research, providing historical narratives, oral histories, general consultation, and assisting core team members in the drafting of adaptive reuse plans for three endangered historic structures in Philadelphia. Areas of focus include Germantown, Powelton Village, and Frankford Avenue. Gray Area has been made possible generous funding from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

Temple University, Journal Of The Early Republic

Tasked with assisting faculty members with course management, grading responsibilities, online records keeping, content development, and conducting independent recitation sessions with smaller student groups. Additionally, since the 2011-2012 academic year I served as Editorial Assistant for the Journal of the Early Republic, a widely disseminated and peer-reviewed academic publication, formerly housed at the University of Pennsylvania. Duties included copyediting and source checking in compliance with JER and Chicago Manual of Style guidelines.

Tasked with updating and monitoring the Preservation Alliance’s Easements Program, which aims to protect the historic integrity of over two hundred commercial and residential properties in and around Philadelphia, PA. Duties included performing routine site inspections, creating a photographic survey, producing comprehensive field reports, and redesigning the Alliance’s FileMaker Pro database toward improved efficiency and data management. This was a three-month position made possible by the Samuel S. Fels Foundation.

Tasked with assessing Wyck’s historic fence, a two hundred year old artifact in disrepair, and drafting a plan to improve and re-interpret the fence in keeping with the Wyck Association’s evolving mission. Duties included archival research, collaboration with museum partners, drafting a report summarizing major findings, and assisting with day-to-day responsibilities and visitor services. This was a three-month position made possible by the Samuel S. Fels Foundation.

Duties included assisting programming, marketing/development, and curatorial staff with ongoing projects throughout the fiscal year. Projects included creating a narrative of 15 S. 7th Street, the historic structure which houses the museum, developing online content in concert with the museum’s renovation, and various research inquiries regarding future exhibits and public programs. The Allen F. Davis Fellowship is an academic year appointment reserved for Temple University doctoral students with a strong academic record and stated interest in public history.

Duties included but were not limited to instructing approximately forty learners, four credit hours per semester, toward improved critical thinking, rhetoric, and academic composition; individual conferencing with students tracking academic progress, and professional development throughout the academic year.

In collaboration with Even Start Family Literacy and Project MoveUp, duties included instructing approximately twenty adult learners, thirty hours per week; designing curriculum appropriate for a mixed level classroom and in accordance with program mission; fostering relationships with workplace skill providers; administering pre-GED and GED assessment materials; preparing monthly case narratives on students’ educational progress; contributing to a team-oriented teaching staff that builds and shares essential resources.
