With 30 years’ experience in product development as a design engineer and project manager, I have a great understanding of how products are transformed from ideas into reality. My views on design and innovation were formed during my time at IDEO, both in London and Palo Alto. I have a particular interest in the application of user centred design to the development of medical products and how teams can innovate while managing technical risk.I work with innovators in the university and start-up sector to help them to identify a way to develop their technology into products. While primarily this is about the process of product development it also includes the identification of funding routes, business and regulatory strategy. I help academics, start-ups and TTOs to get their ideas off the ground, supporting grant applications, planning and strategy, designing products and building teams.An example project is the Bubble PAPR, ‍a ‍collaboration ‍with ‍Manchester ‍Foundation ‍Trust ‍and ‍Manchester ‍University. ‍The ‍project ‍seeks ‍to ‍develop ‍a ‍low-cost ‍Powered ‍Air-Purifying ‍Respirator ‍for ‍use ‍in ‍infection ‍control, ‍- a ‍direct ‍response ‍to ‍the ‍Covid ‍crisis.Specialties: Product Design and Development; User centred design; Medical and healthcare; Commercialisation; Market Validation and Technology Scouting.
