Ship Master At Arms
Uss Boxer
San Diego Harbor
On board the USS Boxer there are many more duties to assume, but on the smaller scale. I had to do all the old things as a military police member, but now there was more ownership. Instead of being able to drop drunk sailors off somewhere else, I now had to oversee the military punishment system acted out, and would have to carry out the Captains orders. The Master at Arms office on board a ship is responsible for the protection of all that is onboard. We were responsible for training a response team and a watch team for all levels of security. I ended up having the opportunity to work along side other forces while onboard such as NCIS, FBI, Australian police forces, the Malaysian Navy, and the Australian Army. I went on two deployments in two years. I also performed typical shipboard duties like Mess hall duties, Firefighting, underway replenishments, cleaning, and painting. We visited a lot of unique places for community relation projects. I was in charge of purchasing and inventorying physical security items such as an airport quality X-ray machine, barriers, and patrol boats. I even ran the brig onboard the ship as the lead correctional officer, though we only had to use it a few times for bread and water, and one sailor who failed to adapt to Navy life onboard a ship.
