In order for our Solar Decathlon team to have a head start at the competition, a group of students and myself decided it was best to have a preliminary project. We decided it was best to build a net zero, solar-powered tiny home on campus. This has been a design build project mainly through the students here at Mines. We have collaborated for a few design charrettes with University of Denver's architecture department, Mines'​ professors and graduates, and tiny home builders themselves. Our biggest help was through builder named Byron who own Simblissity Tiny Homes. Through our networking, fundraising, and events, the tiny home is scheduled to be complete this fall. This is a student design competition where students work with faculty advisors in order to design a sustainable, net zero home. The home our team designing is for the Denver Metro and is titled "The Fountain Flat."​ I am working on the HVAC portion of the design and will be working in accordance with our AutoCAD design lead. This competition is held once a year with teams presenting their designs this April 22nd and 23rd at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory out here in Golden, Colorado.

Through a work study contract, I have been working with Dr. Tabares on his HVAC laboratory. He has built a nearly perfect sealed envelope utilizing a radiant heating and cooling wall. Other students and I have been designing and building walls inside of this envelope to test different phase change materials. Through the use of heat flux meters, thermistors, carbon dioxide sensors, and thermometers the materials and how they affect the environment of the envelope can accurately be tested. This is an experimental laboratory where undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students work in accordance with Professor Tabares and the Mechanical Engineering Department.

Working with a CAD based program on analyzing roof structures for insurance adjusters, general contractors, and private residents. Use of satellite imagery to reach a 95% accurate aerial roof take off report. Simple two page report for each project provided with images, roof pitch, perimeter, and area.

San Francisco Bay Area

When I started this internship in late June, the project I was assigned to was The Rockwell at 1634 Pine Street. The Rockwell building is still under construction and will consist of two fourteen story towers with 261 residences and few interesting amenities such as a garage stacker, penthouse suites, and balconies. When I arrived they just finished their mat pour and started laying out the first level decking. By the time I left this site we were on level seven. It was an exciting experience to work with this team of just five other full time project engineers, one project manager, two supervisors, and two other project engineer interns. Seeing how such a small group of people run and coordinate such a large build was an interesting learning experience.
