At school I was Inspired by Glenn Murcutt who was working on Newcastle Uni Students' Union, with climate responsive design as a primary interest. 1970 was spent working for Allen Jack & Cottier in Sydney before two years in the Oak Road String Band and off-shoots. A range of experience on building sites in Australia & UK was followed by degree and post-grad. studies at Plymouth and work for registration including developing a whole range of Project Homes for George Wimpey UK, interior design for Plymouth Airport Terminal, and concept work on the London STOLPORT with Donald Butler & Associates. Residential work with Ian Pankhurst in Maidenhead included Barn conversions, luxury houses over a wide spectrum, from Heritage Conversions to bespoke luxury homes and additions. Moving to Perth in 1988, projects have varied from University & School buildings, Commercial and Office buildings, and Transfer stations for the Northern Suburbs Transit System, with Brand, Deykin & Hay, in private practice; Toodyay Memorial Hall, BHP Petroleum's HQ in The Burrup and Dai Hung Village and Offices as consultant to BHP Petroleum.Commercial projects include alterations and additions to several heritage hotels; the Yanchep Inn, the Rose & Crown and the Mahogany Inn.As Heritage consultant for Conservation Planning, Assessment and Conservation Works, on various heritage churches, hotels and houses led to planning, with Gerard Siero, a Community Hall and Parish Centre at All Saints for Swan Parish.Meanwhile sustainable/ liveable housing remains an essential pursuit. Training in Urban Design has led to 20 years' campaigning to save Midland Oval as a Central park.

Espresso features Francesca and self on guitars and vocals with Glenn Fitzpatrick on Cajuna persuasion, and Steve Byrne on bass. Steve rode previously with Ned Kelly until the Glenrowan Pub gig which went really pear shaped; they were playing Irish music that night, and drinking which probably explains the raid; literally a train load of police from Melbourne. Pre Covid-10 too. Steve got away somehow.We play old stuff; pre-war swing tunes, Americana, old rock, Gram Parsons, Neil Young, Paul Kelly.The odd original. The Odd Originals would be a better name, I guess.

Subiaco

Projects included Alterations and additions to Yanchep Inn, Gym at Armadale Recreation Centre, Pinjarra Tourist Railway Station, with design for Footbridge and Site Masterplanning, Whalers' Tunnel interior at Fremantle and Conservation works at Midland Railway Workshops.

Perth, Australia

Worked on complex interface aspects of Exchange Plaza, 40 storey office tower, set on the bowling greens of The Weld Club, with several levels of basement carpark, also the Northern Suburbs Transit System with schematic designs for car/bus/train transfer stations, including Glendalough Station. Other work included John Wollaston School and various projects at UWA. Later worked with Woodhead/BDH on heritage aspects of alterations to the original buildings at Bassendean Station, c 2001.

Maidenhead

Ian specialised in Home Counties houses, with some Commercial projects. We produced successful mock Tudor, mock Georgian and mock Edwardian projects for developers and private clients, plus some interesting conversions including a barn in Henley that dated from the sixteenth century, with roughly adzed primary roof trusses, around which we made first floor insertions.Ian's office was great fun to work with; we played golf after work and cricket against our Engineers, and there were some ancient pubs in the area.

Plymouth

Backing the brilliant and departed Michael Barranco ('The Devil' to BB King) on vocals, congas, harp and keyboard, with Glenn Howells on lead, Derek Wylie on rhythm and vocals, Baz on drums, and the amazing John from Virgin Records on sax. Ra Sharks had people dancing on the tables at our first gig, and so it continued; the Blues Brothers reached Devon.When Michael returned to Mississippi, we all settled back to studying Architecture.

Gosford & Sydney Nsw

The Oak Road String Band was Ian Smith, Penny Davies and myself; we had shared a house in Balmain, and escaped to Oak Road, after I got Australia out of Vietnam. We played the folk clubs and winebars around Gosford, and as far as Cessnock, where me met Dr Jurds Jungle Juice.Ian escaped to Nimbin, and became the Secretary of the Tuntable Falls; Gandalf the Gray.Penny & I joined Waterfall with Michael Humphries, lead, John Sharp, keyboards and bass, and our drummer; playing clubs and pubs around Gosford. Pen & I also played as a duo, Danu, at the Balmain Volunteer.Then formed Sydney band Plantation with Idris Alkaimraki, John Popanis, Garth, Peter Ashburner and our bass player John who later came to Perth. Fled Australia after Whitlam dismissal in 1976; spent three years in Devon labouring on building sites, and playing in pub bands.
