Following a career of over 40 years in application and web development, I have returned to my roots in the book world. My days and dreams are now filled with custom hand bookbinding projects and the translation to English of some of my favorite “foreign” books. (In addition to my native English, I have studied and I read French, Portuguese and Spanish.)A reader raised by readers, I began collecting books at the age of 17, and when I was 27, I opened a small bookshop—Sandpiper Books—in Venice, California. In 1978, I established a small publishing company, Sandpiper Press. An early adaptor of personal computers and word processors, I soon recognized the need for PC-based back-office processing for small presses, something to handle the accounting and reporting for orders, shipping, receivables, inventory, royalties, commissions, consignments, etc. (The big houses already had big computers doing those things.) What I hadn’t recognized was how long (three years) it would take to fully develop that software, but that effort and the associated learnings launched my programming career. Now I’ve come full circle, back to the book.
