I’m quite an introspective overthinker (for better or worse), which has given me strong intrinsic motivation to improve/push myself wherever I can throughout life so far.Through my education: I was highly motivated to get up to mischief in my early years, then (thankfully) I remember by being ecstatic to get a perfect score on a maths test & carried that motivation through my education in any maths/science/problem-solving related field that caught my interest. The rest is history, with a string of great educators helping me along the way through my Mechanical Engineering studies.Teenage years/young-adulthood: Pushing my skills, body, & mettle to the limits to film 'stunts' (for lack of a cooler term) no one else has done in the freestyle BMX community, pushing through mental hurdles & physical pain to reach my goals – receiving sponsorship from multiple companies as recognition/reinforcement of my mindset. This also came with a set of injuries (feel free to ask!), further cementing my growth mindset as I became well-versed in the work required to bring my body back to/beyond pre-injury levels.Early career: I routinely punched above my weight, honing skills to manage a broad range of clients/projects well above expectations I had leading into the workforce – enjoying juggling dealing with a fisherman caught at sea at 8:00 am, to a teleconference with a European manufacturer & a government Prime to nut out details for Defence projects towards 5:00 pm, with unique design projects & dozens of different fires to fight in between, all while managing a fulfilling personal life.Home life: I grew up in a house with a full tool-making business operating out of the lower floor – seemed normal at the time; but, in hindsight it gave me a great foundation, growing up learning about materials & manufacturing processes from the ground floor (literally), all feeling like common-sense before any formal education. It was just quite satisfying learning/practicing how to mill/turn(/anything-else) metals to solve my own problems, being told, “We can do anything you want with metal,” followed by instructions of varying intricacy if I didn’t know the process – simultaneously teaching me a healthy respect for the limitations of manufacturing (too many steps in the solution wasn’t too appealing) – a skill I find invaluable in the design process (except youthful-laziness is replaced by costly/complex manufacturing as a deterrent when it’s not my labour).Moving forward: I’m going to continue to move forward, squeezing the most out of my career & life, wherever it takes me.
