About Patrick Jolley

I like to introduce myself as a "farm grown rocket scientist". I like this phrase because I hope that it conveys a few things about me. First, I'm a rocket scientist. I've supported a dozen rocket launches and I love watching them fly. Secondly, to modify that first impression because I'm farm grown. That means I grew up working in the dirt and quickly understood the value of hard work. I still don't mind getting my hands dirty and enjoy the opportunity to work with real, physical objects.I've worked to become a master of Matlab and 6-DOF simulations. But I also like to help tighten the fasteners on a radial joint. I've debugged flight code and pulled lanyard pins all in the same half-hour. I can stand before an audience and deliver an excellent presentation and I am also licensed to drive an 18-wheel tractor-trailer.Trajectory analysis can be intense and require some quiet time. However, I have a tendency to lead and get involved because I don’t like to be left alone in a corner. I enjoy working on programs that go from design, through review, to production, testing, and ultimately field support at time of deployment. (Hopefully, deployment means launch!)If you have a place where an analytically driven engineer can find moments of respite after churning out beautiful plots in Matlab by turning a wrench and then traveling to the field in support of a launch - then please give me a call.Specialties: Fluent in Spanish

My work focuses primarily on GBSD the successor to Minuteman III. Shape ballistic missile system requirements analysis and definition and analyzing proposed system performance. Provide systems engineering technical advisory services as part of a multi-command, multi-contractor team with responsibility for defining and integrating upgrade increments. Support flight test data analysis, system performance analysis, 6 degree of freedom (6DOF) simulation capability, and numerous other tools for system performance prediction and analysis. Validate the 6DOF simulation and correlate it with flight test results and provide system analysis and coding support. Modify or write new code for a 6DOF simulator and use MATLAB to interpret, plot, analyze the results. Monte Carlo analysisDevelop code to simulate interfaces and subsystems, and statistical analysis of flight and simulation results. Define requirements for system and subsystem simulations.Work directly with the United States Air Force in a customer advisory role and provide assistance services.Predict performance; perform analysis of available data to determine system errors; and analyze potential changes in system design for impacts to system performance and resulting errors within the system. Support elaborate Minuteman III system analyses and studies. Prepare reports and give presentations to upper management. Work as an Integrated Project Team member. I'm gaining a lot of experience in Linux, System Administration, SVN, and GIT version control systems. In support of the 2013 Reference Model Review task, I helped verify the input statistics for the Monte Carlo simulations and performed an analysis to verify that sufficient number of runs of the Monte Carlo simulation were executed by showing convergence of the statistics on several output variables.

I love it - I get to support(and watch) several sounding rocket launches a year from launch sites around the world.Officially, what I do:Perform wind weighting analysis on sounding rockets to determine launcher settings using atmospheric models and current wind data and trajectory optimization codes(GEM, TAOS) in an effort to reach altitude and downrange targets. I accomplish this task using a custom GUI I built using MATLAB.Utilize empirical tools to generate aerodynamic and drag tables and integrate with propulsion models. Coordinate with mass properties updates and report trajectory and stability changes to team. Provide comprehensive Flight Safety Data Package reports before flight, provide day of launch, on-site, updated launcher settings based on local wind effects, perform post-flight trajectory comparisons.Manage our growing flight performance department including collaboration with remote sites and sub-contractors.Additionally, I support the payload test and evaluation phase of build up and help in the design and development of embedded flight software systems. I was part of the team that designed and implemented the flight navigation embedded software that combined data from an IMU and GPS for the HI-FiRE Flight 2 joint AFRL/NASA hypersonics program. HI-FiRE 2 was successfully launched and operated nominally.I am trained to work around ordnance and pyrotechnics.

I ensured that the propulsion module met all of its design requirements.NPP - A preparatory project for the NPOESS satellite. It was in the clean room in several pieces when I arrived. I was certified for clean room operations and over the course of the summer directed several operations to assist in the assembly of the propulsion module. My last day I assisted with its first random vibration testing. I loved this internship for the fun finally able to put some of the engineering skills to use with great mentors.
