Health And Physical Education Teacher

Current

Cambridge, Ma

As a Physical Education and Health Teacher in Cambridge Public Schools I have had the pleasure of working in a diverse setting both culturally and socioeconomically. I have had the opportunity to become an expert in creating standards based units and lessons in both subjects, designing behavior management routines and positive behavior systems, working collaboratively with fellow staff members, as well as increasing meaningful two way communication with families and community members. My responsibilities of the position include planning and teaching both health and physical education for grades K-8. Through this position I have learned to be very flexible by traveling between schools (as many as 4) and classrooms as well teaching multiple different age groups and subjects in a given day. In addition to this my years working at the Amigos (two-way bilingual program) has allowed me to become proficient in being a bilingual school in planning and teaching curriculum in both English and Spanish. I have also taken on additional responsibilities as the the school's coach and athletics director responsible for recruitment, scheduling, and coaching athletic sessions throughout each year. This has proven to be a powerful way to build relationships with both students and parents beyond the school day as well as promote and provide opportunities for students to partake in healthy and structured physical activity after school. As a budding school leader I have also taken on multiple leadership experiences through this position including... -Working to develop the health and PE curriculum at the district level. -Taking on leadership roles in various committees including behavioral committees, family and community outreach committees, as well as the Amigos School Council. -Facilitating advisory periods and special events at the school. - Participating in completion of 500+ internship hours necessary to earn administrative license.

Head English Teacher

El Hato Guatemala

In 2013 I decided to take a volunteer position teaching English in a rural village in Guatemala. I had always wanted to live abroad and I had always wanted to learn Spanish. In addition to this I wanted to expand my horizons and put myself into a culture and working environment that was completely different than anything I had ever known so I could become a stronger and more well rounded teacher and person in general. My takeaways from this year abroad will never be forgotten. I learned so much about the teaching profession, about child development, about working with ESL learners, and about working in impoverished communities. By immersing myself in a new culture I grew immensely as a human being. I learned that the life I am so accustomed to in the USA is vastly different to the life others live in other countries. I learned to be more appreciative of what I have and to be a more giving person. I also learned that by giving back with an open heart and an open mind allows me to receive more than I could ever provide to others. As the Head English Teacher at the San Ignacio School in El Hato Guatemala my responsibilities include;-Planning and teaching daily lesson plans for grades 3-8 English for classes as large as 40 students and as small as 4. All classes consist of local Guatemalan students whose primary language is either Spanish or a Mayan dialect. -Designing the long term English curriculum for all grade levels including varied assessment strategies as well as tracking student performance. -Supervising fellow English teachers and short term volunteers which includes facilitating staff meetings, defining shot term and long term goals, and providing feedback to staff.-Communicating with the local Guatemalan faculty.-Embracing community members and spending time with families and students outside of the school day to build a positive and trusting relationship.
