As Health & Safety Advisor, I provide strategic advice on health & safety matters to members of the UTSC community, and represent EHS at meetings involving the Joint Health & Safety Committee, external contractors / service providers, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD), the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), and other regulators. I assess and advise management regarding health & safety concerns brought forward by unionized staff, based on professional judgment and interpretation of relevant legislation and guidelines. I implement projects and initiatives with the aim of fostering safety culture across the campus, and enhancing administrative processes and structures to facilitate collaboration with our community stakeholders and partners.

As Health & Safety Officer, I provided training, information and advice on safe work practices to faculty, staff, and students at the University of Toronto at Scarborough. I worked collaboratively with EHS and UTSC staff to implement and support various EHS programs, such as lab inspections and hazardous waste management, with a large focus on risk identification and mitigation in the areas of biological, chemical, and radiation safety.

- Worked with the Occupational Hygiene and Environment (OHE) team to monitor legal and corporate compliance at shops, carhouses, garages and other facilities in the Greater Toronto Area - Liaised with JHSC, management and Ontario Ministry of Labour representatives in the context of MOL inspections, emergency situations and the work refusal process - Supported and participated in the Internal Responsibility System framework to resolve interpersonal and EHS-related issues in a unionized environment - Implemented, updated and administered various EHS programs, including Hazardous Materials Management, Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection, and Confined Spaces - Performed hygiene sampling, analysis and reporting for various workplace hazards, including chemical agents (asbestos, lead, welding fumes, diesel exhaust, organic vapours associated with painting and body repair, silica, dust, acrylamide), physical agents (noise), and biological agents (mould) - Prepared Workplace Safety and Insurance Board reports for occupational illnesses - Reviewed chemical products and provided safe use, handling and disposal information - Conducted office IAQ investigations and workstation ergonomic assessments - Trained workers and supervisors on a range of OHE topics such as respirator use and maintenance, asbestos, silica, carbon monoxide, ergonomics and hearing conservation
