I currently serve as a Product Development Engineer on the Boeing Research And Technology (BR&T) team, a small group of technologists, engineers and scientists that are chartered “to solve the aerospace industry’s toughest challenges and provide innovative technologies”. My primary duties consist of developing tools to rapidly visualize technical data to non-discipline experts, and to facilitate communications between members of diverse technical disciplines. My projects include building a batch process to sanitize and parse multi-user database for visualization service inputs and updating vehicle integrated system drawings for the NASA Space Launch System.

Huntsville, Alabama Area

I served as a design engineer for the NASA Space Launch System (SLS) Core Stage. I was responsible for reviewing new CAD models and model change notices for drawings. I served as the on-call designer and model checker with authority to correct and ‘check’ non-compliances. I also served as the ‘bullpen’ design engineer. There was a significant backlog in the “awaiting drawing checking” queue for the SLS Core rocket stage. In order to increase the drawing turnover rate my manager organized an early morning “bullpen” which gathered all design stakeholders and approving officials into a single location. I would serve as the on-call designer and model checker for this meeting. I began checking the “queued” drawings and corrected drawing for non-compliances that did not affect form, fit or function. When I had gathered enough of the checked and corrected drawings, a bullpen meeting was called. I pulled up the drawing application on the conference room screen and walked through each drawing, describing the non-compliances and my corrections. If there were any additional corrections or updates that one of the bullpen members wanted, I would update the drawing in real-time and upload the drawing for approval. The approvers could log into the drawing database system and approve the drawing on the spot. This process reduced the average drawing approval turnover time from 17 days to 3 days. I received a Boeing recognition award for the record of the “highest number of accurate model deliveries carried out in a single month in the entire program.” Before I returned for school in the fall, I codified this process and developed a work standard for the bullpen style model checking. It remains a standard process today.

Marshall Space Flight Center

I served as a design engineer in the Solid Propulsion Systems Branch of the Propulsion Department. I was assigned to the development team of a low cost Nanosatellite Earth-to-Orbit launch vehicle. My duties were to develop a conceptual design for a multiple core solid rocket booster that would serve as the vehicle 4th booster stage and a scaled-up version that would serve as the 3rd booster stage.To support development of the launch vehicle’s flight computer I refurbished and modified a spherical air bearing. A spherical air bearing is a frictionless test platform that works by floating a large sphere on a thin layer of gas. This system allows a test article to rotate freely on the sphere in pitch, roll, and yaw. This air bearing test stand allowed testing of a flight computer (FC) controlling a cold-gas reaction control system (RCS). After modifying the bearing to operate on facility air supply systems and facility electrical systems from the onsite machine shop, the RCS/FC payload implementation team was able to test its capability to control the vehicle attitude and spin rate.

Auxier, Ky

I served as a Worksite Manager and safety officer at Hand in Hand Ministries in Auxier, KY in the western Appalachian Mountains. Hand in Hand Ministries is an organization that provides safe housing, education, and health care to impoverished residents. My duties consisted of directing groups of 20-40 volunteers to repair or rebuild storm damaged homes. Work performed included plumbing, gas, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, roofing, gutters, concrete and site preparation.
