About Patrick Lawrence
After an early career as a classical pianist and vocal coach, Patrick transitioned to the world of social justice through volunteering in the humanitarian sector. In 2005 he began work at an addiction medicine clinic in St Kilda, the First Step, where he has recently (April 2017) taken on the role of CEO. While maintaining a role at First Step Patrick began at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in 2007 as the Foodbank Coordinator responsible for the food security of hundreds of the most food insecure people in Melbourne. Over the years, as the ASRC's management structure was transformed Patrick was promoted to more senior roles; his current job title being Director of Humanitarian Services. In his time at the ASRC Patrick was heavily involved in bringing fairness and dignity to service delivery (especially in the Foodbank), strengthening relationships with the community and partner organisations, launching a social enterprise (the award-winning Food Justice Truck) and asylum seeker sector collaboration. Patrick resigned from the ASRC in April 2017 to take up the CEO role at First Step.Patrick still has occasion to share his musical passions with wonderfully talented Australian performers as well as his five children. There is a lovely, though sometimes hectic, balance in his life.
