Volunteer Museum Guide

Current

Bethel, Maine, United States

As a volunteer docent, I guide visitors through the Museum exhibits, which cover topics such as the history of mining in Maine, local geology, exceptional finds, the State's mineral wealth, gem cutting and the lapidary arts, and especially meteorites, as the Museum has an exceptional meteorite exhibit that rivals any other in the country. I answer both general and specific questions, point out information on display and provide extra information I have learned and memorized about most of the topics covered, and remain available for other kinds of assistance. I also occasionally help develop activities for visitors and provide suggestions or corrections to improve the exhibits on display.

Feb 2020 - Present

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Somerville, Massachusetts, United States

I started by shadowing a graduate student to learn the ropes of organic synthesis in the research laboratory of Prof. Clay Bennett, then moved on to assist the graduate student with laboratory tasks in increasingly greater capacity as part of my for-credit research, attending group meetings all the while. After completing my two semesters of research, I stayed with the Bennett Group as a paid, full-time research assistant and took on more responsibility to assist the graduate student in his target synthesis, helped with the work of other students and postdoctoral scholars in the group.

Sep 2017 - Jul 2018

Library Processing Worker

Medford, Massachusetts, United States

As a student at Tufts University, I worked part-time for four semesters and one summer at the Tisch Library, processing new, refurbished, and reclassified media of all types to prepare them for circulation and in-house use at all three major libraries on the Medford/Somerville campus. I also helped sort through many donated books to inform the Acquisitions Department's decisions to keep them or pass them on.

Sep 2014 - Apr 2016

Exhibit Hall Interpretation Intern

Boston, Massachusetts, United States

I worked as an intern with the Exhibit Hall Interpretation department at the Museum of Science for one summer. I ran fun educational activities with museum visitors in a temporary exhibit on (applied) mathematics, both with other employees or volunteers and on my own, and remained available for general or specific questions. Topics of these activities included probability and geometry. As a personal project, I helped develop a new activity that touched on important basic concepts of geometry, before ending my employment to begin university studies.
