Neuroengineer Intern
Ph.D. Candidate, Nsf Fellow - Department Of Bioengineering
- Lead a project using brain-computer interfaces to reveal separation of motor and sensory signals in biological neural networks- Analyze and visualize complex neural datasets using MATLAB and Python, driving insights that form the basis for high-impact publications- Design and implement machine learning and statistical models to decode motor and sensory information from neural data, including regression, classification, and dimensionality reduction- Communicate results clearly in international conference presentations (2022 & 2023 Neural Control of Movement Conference award recipient) and published journal articles (list below)- Build pipeline in MATLAB to clean and preprocess 50+ neurophysiological datasets; query data using MySQL- Collaborate with a cross-disciplinary research team to investigate the neural basis of “choking under pressure,” resulting in work that won the 2022 McClelland prize for outstanding research at Pitt- Design and implement signal processing algorithms to filter, smooth, and reject artifacts in neural signals, enabling experiments and analyses- Design and conduct tens of neuroscience experiments which remove confounds to test hypotheses and reveal relationships between variables of interest- Perform statistical and hypothesis testing (ANOVA, t-test, confidence interval)
Master'S Student, Nsf Fellow - Department Of Mechanical Engineering
- Led a project developing a classification algorithm to improve neural control of robotic prosthetic arms by paralyzed patients. Algorithm was the first to detect a user’s intent to reach from ECoG neural data- Optimized algorithm to prevent dangerous, unwanted robotic motion while allowing for intentional motion- Co-founded the Neural Interface Initiative. Hosted monthly meetings with invited speakers to foster the growth of a brain-machine interface community. Secured funding and had over 25 members within 2 years - Designed and validated a custom hardware setup for collecting high-resolution neural and kinematic data in patients’ hospital rooms. Collected 3 human subject datasets which were used to train the algorithm- Mentored an undergraduate student as he designed, built, and tested a robotic manipulator
Reu Summer Research Assistant
- Designed (CAD), modelled, fabricated, and controlled a low-cost, wheelchair-mounted robotic arm to assist paralyzed patients, meeting all performance specifications within a 2-month timeline
Mechanical Engineering Intern
- Developed a model to calculate heat recovered and money saved in a waste heat recovery project, which formed a critical part of Hargrove’s project proposal to the client
