I am a psychiatrist, a researcher and currently executive director of Orygen which is Australia's largest translational health and medical research institute for mental health research. I am also Professor of Youth Mental Health at the University of Melbourne. In addition to my clinical and research roles, my dominant focus has been to work with others as a reformer in the mental health and social policy fields to achieve equity and fair deal for people with mental illness within health care and society. I want to see an end to "us and them" thinking. Early intervention and a focus on youth mental health is one key strategy to achieving this goal and it must be powered by innovative research guided by young people and the best brains on the planet! This mission depends on community mobilisation and support, a sympathetic media and politicians who care and will execute the reforms we all desperately need. I have been married to Merilyn Hawke for 40 years and have 3 sons Liam, Niall and Fionn.
