I am thrilled to share that I've been named the Chief Development Officer at Polaris, the leading organization in the fight against human trafficking. Polaris tackles both labor and sex trafficking with response (the National Human Trafficking Hotline) and prevention. As compelling as the work of the Hotline is (our Hotline Advocates are true heroes), it's the prevention strategy that really animates me.Polaris understands that it is socio-economic injustices and inequities that make people vulnerable to trafficking. Data shows that the vast majority of trafficking victims identified in the United States are people who have historically faced discrimination and its political, social and economic consequences: People of color, indigenous communities, immigrants and people who identify as LGBTQ+ are disproportionately victimized. People living in poverty, or foster care, or are struggling with addiction, trauma, abuse or unstable housing, are all at comparatively higher risk for trafficking. So in short:* Fighting racism is fighting human trafficking* Upholding LGBTQ+ equality is fighting human trafficking* Providing safe and affordable housing is fighting human trafficking * And protecting workers rights is fighting human traffickingPolaris' three Big Fights are to reduce sex trafficking in 25 US cities; end labor trafficking of migrant guestworkers; and equip the global financial sector to disrupt human trafficking. By putting survivors in the center of our work; by going upstream to address the causes of vulnerability; and by using data and technology to disrupt trafficking systems, we're going to save and improve lives.I can't wait to dive into this work, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to work in service of such a worthy cause.
