About Patrick Mckenzie

I am a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Hopkins lab in Harvard University's Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology studying the evolution of flowering plants. My theoretical focus is on speciation biology, and my research is a mix of phylogenomics, bioinformatics, and methods development.I graduated with a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in May 2017. I received my Ph.D. from Columbia University's Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology in 2023.

    Hesler Biology, Armsworth Lab
Using data from protected land parcels across Appalachia to 1) build predictive models explaining how abiotic parcel characteristics explain variation in ecological concepts of alpha, beta, and gamma diversity among the protected areas, and to 2) prioritize investments to maximize biodiversity coverage across selected parcels, using predictive models. Presented at NCUR 2016.

Harvard Forest REU:With the Jonathan Thompson lab at Harvard Forest. The Thompson lab uses a variety of forest landscape models to predict how future disturbances could influence forest composition. I am conducting a sensitivity analysis of percentage-abundance outputs of different species from the new PnET-Succession of the widely-used LANDIS-II forest landscape model. The PnET-Succession extension takes a mechanistic approach to predicting growth under future climate scenarios.Presented at 2016 Harvard Forest Summer Research Symposium and 2016 NIMBioS Undergraduate Research Conference. One resulting publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

The James Hutton Institute May 2015 - Jul 2015
    Aberdeen, Scotland
Worked with Prof. Glenn Iason's research group on their ongoing chemical ecology research. The research group studies how environmental variation affects the ability of Scots Pines to defend themselves from invasive pests. Collected data from common garden experiments and for a pine lappet moth feeding experiment.
