Over the last 3 years I have held the role of Executive Director Specialist Services. This role is primarily responsible (as chief operating officer) for the staff (4,000), operational budget ($500m p.a.), and delivery of hospital services at Dunedin and Southland. My initial focus was on creating stability in the delivery of elective surgical services. We did this by developing a robust outsourcing programme, putting daily theatre review processes in place, putting process in over January and February to ensure full elective lists were committed to and improving the number of cases able to be completed for each theatre session.More recently my team and I have developed successful cases to expand the intensive care resourcing, implement a new ‘generalist’ admitting model for internal medicine which incorporates a medical assessment unit, expand Dunedin based CT capacity and implement improved processes for managing demand to match capacity (and prioritise accordingly) for outpatient services.Another key focus has been to systematically improve the accuracy of the budget process to better match budget to the required expenditure needed to deliver our semi-tertiary services. This included the development of budget testing models and the closure of $12m worth of budget holes in the last financial year.
