About Patrick Putnam
I am a Computer Scientist with a background in high performance parallel computing and computer simulation. My general interests are in large scale data analysis, high performance computing, data structures and architectures, machine learning, and algorithmic efficiency. I enjoy pushing the computational limits of available resources and attempting to achieve solutions that perform as close to the expected theoretical performance bounds as possible. In effect, I endeavor to do more with less through the creation of an efficient end-to-end solution. My professional career has taken me from a Researcher to a Software Engineer to a Data Scientist. In each of these roles, I have worked closely with large scale data sets of various forms and complexities. I have delivered solutions to problems ranging from data architecture definition and implementation to developing custom software for data analysis and finally to deriving business value from the data. Throughout my career I have been fascinated with parallel computing in all of its various forms. Most recently I have been developing Spark-based applications for distributed ML Pipelines, data analysis and ETL pipelines. In addition, I have leveraged Tensorflow and CUDA for computer simulations and deep-learning applications.I also enjoy teaching and sharing technical knowledge. I serve as a technical mentor and educator to several aspiring Data Scientists.
Listed skills include Python, Databases, C++, Java, and 45 others.

Staff Engineer - Data Science
I was a technical leader on a cross functional/domain team working to enhance our internal data ecosystem. This involved working with leaders from Supply Chain, Engineering, and Data Scientists to help identify common technical needs/requirements as well as guiding toward a data architecture that would effectively and efficiently support the system.I led an effort to develop and deliver a discrete event simulator capable of modeling internal processes. I was the project architect as well as lead software engineer developing the simulation capability. I guided and mentored junior engineers through data engineering and data science tasks which aided in the production of models that accurately reflected the current system.I served as a technical consultant on Data Science projects and initiatives. I have provided problem definition, methodology development, implementation guidance/assistance, and result reviews. The projects have included anomaly detection, workscope prediction, and image classification.I have also been the project lead for establishing AWS-based resources to support data exploration and analysis for a project that generates TB of data annually. I worked with a small team to pilot the setup S3 and EMR resources. I was an administrator of the AWS resources. I also served as lead data architect and developer to produce the Spark-based data ingestion and analytic pipelines.I worked as a consulting Data Engineering on a variety time-sensitive projects. These projects often involved developing custom Spark-based data pipeline to produce an adhoc data set and often had very short deadlines.I continued to be a technical mentor of both Computer Science and Data Science to many junior and several senior employees. I was involved in both the teaching and administration for the inaugural offering of an internal course on Data Science. I have also taught an internal course on Spark.
Senior Data Architect
Further developed Spark-based end-user functionality. Continued to train and mentor broader Data Science community on Spark and scalable computing.
Senior Software Engineer
I was responsible for defining, implementing, and evaluating the data architecture for several key data sets. This involved developing a Spark-based ETL pipelines as well as end-user tooling to enable efficient consumption of the data, as well as performing the historical load tasks. In addition, I was directly involved in defining requirements for and testing of a new Hadoop environment and Spark. I was responsible for demonstrating the capability of the new environment as well as Spark. In addition, I served as a mentor to junior employees and trainer of the internal Data Science community.
Consultant - Data Science
Worked as a Data Scientist developing analytic software that leverages Natural Language Processing techniques to perform pattern matching. The tools were developed using the Spark computing framework. Data was maintained in Impala databases.
Application Developer
Performed Bioinformatic research and algorithm development for Population Genetics applications. Explored compact data structures, algorithmic optimization, and heterogeneous parallel computing techniques for enhancing computation performance. The focus of this was in the development of forward time population genetics simulator and was the basis for my dissertation.
Application Specialist
In 2007-2008 I worked in the DNACore developing ETL processes to help automate aspects of the daily sequencing efforts performed in the lab. The lab performed several task that would generate large volumes of raw data as well as provide initial quality analysis of the generated data. The customers would then consume the data from an internal Web Portal. I developed the ingestion pipeline that would consume the analyzed data files, extract pertinent data, perform basic data transformations, and load the data into the back-end Oracle database. In the early years of NextGen genome sequencing, visualization and analysis of the sequencing data was a challenge. I developed a C#-based tool for aiding in the analysis of this data. It would take as input the raw sequencing data, run a sequence alignment tool (i.e. BLAST), collate the data, and provide a short read visualization of the aligned data. Prior to visualization, the tool would analyze and record anomalies detected in the aligned reads. The tool was used internally at CCHMC and aided in the discovery of novel mutations. As commercial offerings for short read visualization improved and became more available, I shifted my focus to the computational performance aspects of Genomic data analysis. This led to the development of a C/C++ API that explored the use of compact data representation and optimized algorithms.
Software Engineer
Developed server side software for data acquisition and statistical reporting. Helped to address scalability concerns. Worked specifically with Oracle and SQLServer 2008 database back-ends.
It Co-Op Student
I worked as an IT Co-op for GE Engine Services Japan. I was responsible for developing process automation software. Created a software solution that helped in the reduction of an 8 hour process to 1-2 hour process.
Co-Op Student
Early projects involved software documentation and bug testing. Helped to establish a test suite for main product. Developed new GUI for managing user permissions within main product.
