Wet Mill Process Engineer Intern

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States

Worked with third party Contractors, Operations, and Safety on site to scope a $170,000 project aimed to improve the Wet Mill Cooling Water System water quality through use of Sulfuric Acid. The addition of a sulfuric process to the Wet Mill Cooling Water System to be used for pH control, will increase the water cycles concentration ratio from 1.5 to 3.5 for the cooling water system. In total this project will save on a year round basis approximately $62,500 and 19.5 million gallons of water. Implemented a management of change to assist millhouse and refinery operators in their changeover process between grinding waxy and dent corn. Working with Delta V program software I added a new selection toggle button to improve communication between millhouse and refinery operators when the millhouse switches between grinding dent and waxy corn. A timer toggle was also added to refinery operating screen to help operates keep track of time to assist with what actions to perform during the changeover process. To help determine the amount of Dent, Waxy, and Break starch is produced, new totalizers for the starch product bins were added. The overall goal of this management of change is to help mitigate the amount of break starch that is created during the changeover process. The long-term goal is to be able to reduce the amount of break create enough to have longer waxy runs. Created and update standard operating procedures to assist with operation training and safe operating techniques.Labeled all of the valves for the Millhouse and Refinery buildings P&ID’s. Created an excel document for both buildings with each valves number, size, and type for future maintenance work and project reference. Created and implemented the Germ Sink/Float test for millhouse operators. This test is used to determine if the germ clones on site are working efficiently to separate the germ in the corn from fiber, gluten, and starch.

Field tested and approved 9 total TDLS units for customer orders. Worked directly with the laser diodes in the TDLS Units to determine if the laser was suitable for manufacturing and met company standards.Created flammability calculations in software programs for gas types used in manufacturing testing of TDLS8000. This program allows the customer to provide process specifications such as gas type, temperature, pressure and flow rate to determine if we can safely manufacture a TDLS unit to meet their process specifications. The program can also be used to determine the flammability and safety risks of gas exposure in the event of a gas leak in a production facility.Collaborated on company projects with colleagues and interns to increase productivity and efficiency.
